Crafting is an expression of who you are. Your imagination comes alive as you create something new. You can be inspired by something you see or hear in passing and then incorporate this idea into the craft you are working on. This happened to me when I was making a memory quilt for my father. I wanted the quilt to be unique to him, something that would reflect a part of who he is. I spent weeks brainstorming ideas as to what to include on the quilt, but nothing was coming to mind that I felt was ‘perfect’ for him. One day, I was looking at old family photos and happened across a picture of my Dad playing his saxophone. This set in motion quite a few ideas of what to include on the quilt. The final design of the quilt included appliqued ‘music notes’ with pictures of family members as the ‘note-heads’. This is one of my favorite quilts. My Dad’s response to the unique quilt was something that cannot be described adequately, but let’s just say there was a lot of hugs and tears!
I encourage you to brainstorm, set yourself free, let your imagination run wild and see what you can create! Let your surroundings inspire you! All you need to do is start somewhere…you never know where you will end up and that is part of the fun!
